Body:

What do you get when you cross a RealDoll with a BoyToy?

Ruby saw her beginnings as a sculpture made from car body fill.  She was a labor of love by Don Edmondson,  a talented artist who drew sexy biker girls that appeared in Easy Rider Magazine.  He was not new to replicating the female form, only new to doing it in 3D.  There is much more to this story, however.  Ruby  immediately hit the hearts of those who saw her.  This sparked her evolution into a full fledged platinum silicone love doll…one of the hottest and most anxiously awaited dolls to reach the market.  According to Don, Ruby has gone through 13 revisions – hence the name Ruby 13.  So here she is – Ruby13 –  serial # 1, designed by a man that treats each doll manufactured as his own personal work of art.
Ruby has exaggerated features - enhanced I would say - features most of us have come to love in a woman – voluptuous breasts, trim body, sexy behind and big beautiful alluring eyes.   Her design technique caricatures the female form, but in a flattering way.  Although her features have less detail than the RD, they in fact add to Ruby’s charm,  and give her a more ‘fantasy-like’ appearance.  When I look at Bianca RealDoll’s face I see many subtle features that give her a realistic or ‘natural human quality’.  Bianca’s presence in the studio is much like that of a real woman.  Ruby, on the other hand, is more like Veronica stepping out of an Archie Comic.  For instance, she does not sport lower eyelashes, but I did not miss them. As a matter of fact it was over a week before I even noticed.  Also she does not have the detailed labia that you find on a RealDoll. She does have authentic fingernails - not the rubber type found on a RealDoll.  Ruby does not come with permanent make-up so be prepared to get your eyebrow pencils and lipstick out for touch-ups or makeovers.

Priced at $4500, Ruby 13 falls right between the RealDoll and the BoyToy in features while ringing in at $500 to $1000 less.  My Ruby arrived packaged well protected and in tact. She has a face #4 of 7 and a blond wig which does not appear to be in their lineup.

My Ruby is the first 'retail' doll released.  One could expect to encounter problems in 'early production models',  yet  I am pleased, but not surprised at how few I have encountered.  Not surprised, because I have been following the Ruby development since her inception. I know that Don’s insistence on quality control will guarantee any  problems found will likely be addressed in the very next production doll out the door.  As a matter of fact, the only two problems I encountered with my Ruby were not unexpected and were already being addressed.  Mind you, neither of these problems would have deterred me from ordering Ruby, nor did they.

In the manufacturer's words, "Both wrists are flexible. Her ankles and feet can be moved into natural positions and slip nicely into a pair of size six sneakers or heels. "

Ruby is extremely flexible and ‘made for business’.  She has a solid skeletal structure, however, except for the neck and wrists, she does not have rigid pose-ability. This  floppy nature (I call this doll a ‘flexi’) makes her a much better bed parter than a photography model,  but with a little creative posing, she is totally charming as a model as well. Her most natural pose is sitting or kneeling.

"Ruby is a hybrid... very flexible and natural... rather than rigid or floppy. We’ve combined thick walled electrical pvc, flexible solid aluminum rod and heavy nylon cord. We’ve employed chain steel elbow and knee joints."

Ruby Faces

A great feature of the Ruby is her interchangeable heads.  At the time of this review there are seven faces available, but expect to see more from this ambitious manufacturer. Ruby is the first American made production doll to offer interchangeable heads which until now have been available on only Japanese dolls.

"...you’ll find each expression remains “Ruby” with only a few subtle variations which reflect differing ethnicities and moods ranging from sweet & demure, coy but curious... to seductively naughty! Then of course, there’s the “it’s time for bed” yawn which will accommodate other notions you may be entertaining..."

Heads can be swapped in a matter of seconds and come at a lessor price than the RD and BT faces.  Ruby’s head is much more pose-able than an RD.  It has 360 degree swivel as well as up and down and holds the position rather than centering like the RD. Ruby can look back over her shoulder with those alluring eyes while leaning over the couch as if to say, “Would you like to take me from behind, honey?”

Ruby Blond

And that brings me to another point – If a bed partner is your primary reason for having a doll,  Ruby’s light weight - under 60 pounds – and flexi design allows her to be used in most any sexual position - doggie, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, and yes..missionary without the need to prop up her behind.   Of course the addition of the Head #5 adds additional playtime fun. Midiman regrets that he did not have the opportunity to review Head #5 In the manufacturer's own words...and I believe them...

"When combining Face #5 with Ruby in a sitting or kneeling position, the flexibility in her spine can really pay off. ”Nice body motion.” With a little more coaxing she can hold a sitting position. "

Yep...Head 5, here I cum :)

How does she feel?

"...we’ve opted to spend the extra bucks on the finest platinum grade additional cure silicone available. We've paid specific attention to making her skin thicker where it needs it."

The boobs are firm – firmer than a RealDoll - not soft like a 1st PC. As a matter of fact the entire doll feels a little firmer than a RealDol in most places, yet very pleasant to the touch.  With a set of nylons on, her legs feel much firmer and more muscular the Bianca. Ruby must be taking the right vitamins. Based on other articles I have read, I expect the silicone will soften some over time.  Her entries appear to be very durable, yet soft and usable.

"We’ve also paid particular attention to her “girly” parts (both front and rear). Inside you’ll find a combination of strategically placed waves and texture."

girly parts
Well said! She is a very well designed, capable sex partner that should meet most any owner’s demands. I expect you will never see any ripping in these well reinforced yet pliable areas...mind you 'never' is a long time :) True, she does not have the aesthetics, but I give stronger points to functionality..so screw the aesthetics... no..wait... screw the functionality...yeah, that's right :)

Dolls. like cars, have many features, and there is always a trade-off… IE. weight vs pose-ability… functionality vs. durability….   You will have to spend countless hours researching and determining which doll best suits your needs.  But one thing is certain in my opinion; The Ruby13 will not likely disappoint anyone who acquires her.

There are many things to consider when purchasing a doll, and when you are about to lay down $6000 to $8000, you don’t want to end up disappointed.   If you seek authenticity and realism in the looks of your doll, perhaps the RealDoll will better suit your tastes with her anatomically correct detailing, rigid pose-ability and sexual capabilities.  However,  if you want a fully functional, fantasy playmate that takes you to new levels, Ruby may just be the doll you’ve been waiting for.

Cheers,

Midiman

Ruby Hat

I like her taste in hats!

For the Doll World, 13 has become a lucky number.

I should also mention the deluxe website the Ruby13 team has put together. I was not surprised by the high quality of the doll when I received it because I had met the design team. BUT, the website ‘blew me away’.  They put every bit of design effort into the site that they did the doll.  No cutting corners.  This is a web site that stands out in the crowd, but why not? So does Ruby13.

Addendum for Ruby13 Review

Problems and Concerns

  1. The wrist joint is very flexible, using a 'lockline' to allow for flexible movement.  The plus side is that she holds position well in swiveling and positioning the wrist.  This is great for posing and photography, however, if it were to receive a strong pressure bending it more than about 80 degrees at the wrist, it could pop apart.  This is exactly what I managed to do this, when I set the doll down on her hand. The now ‘floppy wrist’ shows no outside marks and looks normal. However, to fix the wrist, a considerable amount of pressure has to be applied to pop the joint back together. This may not be possible without making a small incision on the back of the wrist. Don was worried about the joint even before shipping the doll, and has already addressed the potential problem in the newer models.   The new mod, according to Don,  gives a practical compromise between flexibility and durability.

  1. The neck seems a bit on the 'flimsy side of things'.  Again, Don is addressing this as I type.  When I 'flipped the doll around from back to front, the neck joint (a post that goes from inside the torso up into the head with flexible section in between) popped out.  This is friction held, so again was relatively easy to re-install.  I say reinstall, because she arrives with her 'head between her legs' so to speak :)   One has to install the neck piece before putting her head on.  You could say the neck joint is like a safety valve in a pressure cooker, designed to give under pressure thereby preserving the neck pillar and the head. The only  problem is it needs a little more strength so it won't give as early.   Also, the neck needs a bit more friction so the head can hold a horizontal position such as when posing on hands and knees.
  2. UPDATE: March 2009. My Ruby has been sporting the new neck piece for several months now, without problems, and the screw adjustment allows for setting the amount of friction for rotating and tilting the head.

That’s it, so don’t let any of this deter you.  The new neck pillar would have been an easy install to anyone having the old, and it would appear that only my Ruby awaits one. Next time someone asks me to pick a number, it will be 13.

Stay tuned for Midiman’s Boy Toy review hopefully before Christmas.
