Silk Kimono

Silk Kimono

For this months blog, Kayla is modelling a beautiful silk kimono. To say I'm delighted with the way it turned out would be an understatement, it's one of my favourite shoots to date. I decided to do the shoot back lit so the focus is on her and to emphasize the costume, besides I don't have all the props to do a full oriental themed shoot yet.

Shot using a Canon 700D with a Sigma DC 17-70mm lens. No photoshop, but heavily edited in Lightroom to balance the exposure, contrast and stauration, and also to create some more unusual effects.

As a photographer, the huge advantage of the Ex-Lite is her realistic height and proportions. At 5'4" it's easy to find clothes that fit, and this costume I picked up on Ebay for a ridiculously low price. Unless there is something very specific that im looking for, I rarely buy new clothes or accessories for photoshoots. Frankly, there is no need.

The, advent of online shopping, 'fast fashion' and the rise of instagram has exacerbated the desire to never be seen in the same outfit twice. Once the demise of the rich and famous, it is now mainstream, especially amongst the younger generation who play out there lives on social media.

Its a sad reflection on our society and evidence of the pervasive 'throw-away' culture, that once a selfie or two is posted in a certain outfit, the outfit itself becomes 'old news', and will likely never see the light of day again, almost certainly never on-line.

The good news however, for me as a photographer at least, is that rather than consigning the said clothes to the back of the wardrobe, they are increasingly being posted for sale on auction sites or FB groups, and there are bargins to be had if you look in the right places.

Its nearly a year since I've had Kayla, and in that time, I've probably aquired more clothes/boots/costumes and accessories by trawling Ebay, FB and charity shops than ill ever have time to shoot properly. I'll use this blog to post a shoot of one of the best each month.

As a bonus, here my first attempt at creating a short video edit of the final shots.

Its a bit rough round the edges, but hope you all enjoy anyway.

That haori is stunning. My goodness those are lovely shots. I liked your write-up too, a good read.

Thanks Mondoon,

I always enjoy taking pics of Kayla, but this was shoot was extra special, it really was a joy. It took about 3 hours in total (more time spent on the editting!), but half of that time I was just sitting back admiring the view with a huge grin on my face :)

Not sure what the difference between a kimono and a haori is, but will do a little research. Thanks for the heads up yes

I really like what you have going on here! I too love to brows the thrift stores. They are a wealth of variety! Way to go!

GDY ... I love this shoot! Especially the white background shots. The way the super white light spills around Kayla. Just superyes
