Meet Naraya

Duality

Say hello to Naraya. She's an Irontech 150 with the Victoria head. She was born this year on January 22nd and reached home in Hawaii on February 6th of this year. The adventure that follows is one we'll never forget...

Within a month of arriving, we were asked if we wanted to do a shoot for CoverDoll. We were floored by it as photography was a new thing for us and we were having fun doing it.

It wouldn't be until the last weekend of June that we were able to do a shoot by the ocean. We're from Hawaii and when the chance to do it came up, we didn't hesitate. It ended up being a disaster when an accident while shooting caused me to loose the camera to the ocean. Everything was lost, Naraya's elbow ended up partially snapped in the ordeal, and we thought there was no way to do this now. Lesson learned the hard way; always dump to the PC after shoots no matter how tired you are.

Equipment

Thankfully, the 16 megapixel camera in the Galaxy S6 isn't that bad, nor is Naraya's snapped elbow joint. There was still hope. So we prepared on the 3rd, started shooting on the morning of 4th, and didn't finish until late afternoon the next day. We shot around the clock, spare 2 hours of sleep & 10 hours of day job grind, to take nearly two hundred photos using nothing but the S6's camera in full auto. No filters were applied. For lighting, we used a mix of soft white incandescent bulbs, a few colored LED bulbs here & there, and varying levels of natural indirect sunlight. The only image post processing that was done was resizing & cropping using paint.net.

It's not the original plan, but we had a blast doing this. Please enjoy the two shoots that together, we call "Duality".

Note from the Editor: Each month we will feature a different photographer's work. We invite doll owners and manufacturers alike to participate in this new monthly feature. Photo shoots must meet a minimum quality level. If you do not meet that level we are happy to work with you, critique your photos and help you to raise the bar on your photography. Good photo shoots can be had with low cost digital cameras. It is all in the technique.
