" Fashion 101, Lesson 2: Dos and Don’ts of Accessorizing"

"By Zoe"

Hi guys! Wow, has it been a whole month already? Well, I guess that means it’s time for another fashion lesson from me. Being a professor is kind of fun. :-D

As you can tell from the title, this lesson is all about accessories, which can either make an outfit or break it. I’m also going to provide an awesome video all about cool ways to tie scarves because “dolltime” asked for scarf tips for his girls. You can do a LOT with a good scarf, as you’ll see in the video.

First though, let me share the cardinal rule of accessorizing. Put all the pieces you think you want to wear on, and then remove one. Chances are high that when you put on everything you think you want to wear, you’ll have too much on and it will overwhelm your outfit. Remember from lesson one that you want to have one focal piece of your outfit that is accented by your jewelry. Don’t overrun the outfit with too much clutter.

Here’s a great example of what NOT to do.

This outfit started out nicely with the classy brown skirt and pink sweater. But then the accessories started piling up and now the outfit is drowning in too much stuff. We’ve got a necklace, a cute pin, a sequined bow headband, cute ladybug earrings, a belt, two bracelets, two rings, an ankle bracelet, and shoes with bows on them. Each piece by itself is really cute – but when you put everything together it’s just too much.

Here’s this same outfit only with a proper amount of accessories:

You can see that I kept the belt, earrings, shoes, and bracelet. It’s perfectly okay to use cute accessories like bows and ladybug earrings – just do it in moderation.

Now, for scarves; Scarves are extremely popular right now, but a lot of people don’t know how to tie them to keep them interesting. I’ve been guilty of this myself in the past, but not anymore since I discovered this video. The first time you watch it don’t worry if you’re confused because the girl in it does move pretty quickly and doesn’t talk. But once the video is over you will be able to click on any of the styles that caught your eye and you’ll be taken to a more in-depth tutorial where she moves more slowly and does talk. Pretty awesome.

For my next column, I’d like suggestions from you guys. What would you like to know about, or what questions would you like answered?

Thanks.

Thanks Zoe, another great article packed with some invaluable advice. :) You were right the video is a tad too fast for me but the supporting ones are ace, thanks. :)

Not too sure about anything specific for your next article, but maybe at some stage if you could touch on what's in vogue in the fashion world and what's not, that would be cool.:) I see a lot of young girls out on the town in their short skirs, even though it's sub zero tepmeratures out doors, and I also see a lot of young gilrs out and about literally tripping over the maxi skirts!? I suppose there's no real answer to my question it's just a matter of what a person likes and thinks suits them best. But any suggestions would be great, thanks, and thanks again for a great coulmn.:)
