From "Realdoll " to "Real-Woman", is it even possible?

By Mike Kelly

In 1982, the movie "Blade Runner" was released, which was a very different movie for the time. No longer were the images depicted bright and happy. Instead, the movie was dark and foreboding. In the version first released to the screen (not the director’s cut) the main character featured was a cop, down on his luck, who meets and falls in love with an android. "More human than human" was the motto at the company that manufactured these replicant humans.

The Androids were so human looking in fact, you couldn’t tell them apart from regular humans. When I first saw this movie, this seemed a little far-fetched. How could a man fall in love with a machine? How could a machine ever look human? Could you have "sex" with a machine? The movie took place in the year 2020 and now the year is 2001, where are we in relation to the android technology featured in this movie? Because of the pioneering work in the Android field Matt, president of Abyss Creations has done, today, we have three companies making "Androids", with one model - "Andy2000" which is manufactured in Germany being marketed as an actual android (Android simply means human like in appearance). The original and most numerous "Androids" are the "Realdolls" manufactured by Abyss Creations. These – unlike their German counterparts are marketed as the finest "lovedolls" you can purchase. The Realdolls made by Abyss Creations look very, very realistic and many of their owners feel a sort of

Attachment for them, Yahoo clubs are created for them, websites and of course photo shoots and photo galleries displaying the dolls wearing the latest fashions are in abundance.

As a Realdoll owner, I know how this attachment goes. I always wonder: in the future, could my "Realdoll" ever become a "Realwoman"? Well, I have to answer that with a yes. Let’s take a look at how in the future that could happen. The important things your Realdoll needs to become a Real-woman are robotics and an artificial intelligence program. Roboscience - makers of the RS-01 Robodog are diligently working on domestic robots for home use. Their first model – the RS-01 Robodog is a full size dog running a sophisticated dog A. I. program that allows the dog to think and make decisions on it’s own. The problem this robot faces and problem Roboscience is trying to solve is the problem with bipedal motion (walking upright). A robot dog is much easier to make because it can stand on four feet, balancing on two feet is much, much harder. Computers are going to double in power every two years at least until the year 2020, so a computer A. I. program that allows the robot to balance on two feet is only a matter of time before it’s created. I’m convinced that in the future, 98% of the robots made will look like robots (R2D2 utilitarian appearance) because of the additional expense and higher maintenance costs of a robot having the appearance of a human being (do you really need your robolawnmower to look like Ann Margret?).

These robot lawn mowers and robot vacuum cleaners that look similar to R2D2 from the "Star wars" movies would perform our mundane household tasks for us. Androids– robots with a human-like appearance would be used in roles where a human appearance would be a necessity. A teaching companion for children, for example. With good care, in the future, could your Realdoll be converted into a true Android? ("RealWoman")? Of course, but the conversion would not be cheap or simple. This would be a complex procedure no matter when in the future it was accomplished. The simplest way would be to purchase the Roboscience Robodog and map it over to your Realdoll. The dog’s brain and basic parts such as the power plant would be relocated into your Realdoll’s chest. The dog A. I. program would have to be revised to a woman’s A. I. program (if this was not done, your Realdoll would behave like a dog when turned on). The complex system of servers the dog uses for locomotion would be relocated into your doll and revised for a human frame. The frame would need revision to allow the Realdoll to stand and of course, a program for bipedal balancing and motion would be required also. The dog’s vision and hearing sensors would need to be transplanted into your Realdoll also. An extremely complex task, but in six years, perfectly possible. With computers doubling in power every two years, the longer you wait, the better and more complex the AI program your "Realwoman" will be able to run.

The state that the robotics industry is at today has been compared to where we were at with computers in 1976 when the Apple II – the first personnel computer ever was released.

I believe that the "robot era" is only just beginning, the "robodogs" and the "love dolls" on the market today are only hinting at what the future will bring. With proper care there is no reason that the "Realdoll" of today can’t become the "Realwoman" of tomorrow.
