GUYS AND DOLLS

As reported by Mike Kelly

I was surprised to find out that many thought that “Guys and Dolls” was an outstanding documentary. I myself spent three days living with two Brits making the show for mainstream British TV. This was my third time working with the media – I was on TV for another special on Realdolls and also worked with an author on a major magazine Realdoll article.

I did it because the doll people worked with me when I wrote the Realdoll articles that was published in various men’s magazines like “Hustler”.

When I saw the finished product I was not impressed at all. But some people like Everhard were and I quote:

“I have seen it and it is outstanding! It is done as a factual documentary with no sensationalism. North One Television selected the parts that showed us as reasonable people (which I am not always).

The program makers have spotted several similarities and differences among the contributors to this documentary and they have constructed it to bring them to the astute viewer’s attention without any heavy-handedness. One of the first things they show of my situation is my 1/48 scale F-4 Phantom hanging in the hall. Then, when Gordon Griggs comes on, there is a sci-fi poster behind him with a jet aircraft in exactly the same pose. And in Mike Kelly’s room, behind one of his dolls, is a huge yellow radio control Pitts Special (or a similar type of biplane).

It is full of interesting statements. Matt McMullen, inventor of the Realdoll, explains in simple terms why Realdolls are a good thing for some people, and he rounds off his comparison of owning a doll instead of having a human partner by adding “...and the food bills are way cheaper.” Gordon’s straight-forwardness is refreshing in a cynical world. In this film he comes across very positively. The dolls all look beautiful and very different one from another. Slade’s girl friend, Rebecca (very attractive but very different from my Rebecca), admits to some reservations. “The dolls themselves are intimidating to women.”

Mike Kelly explains most clearly, from the male point of view, the pros and cons of life-like dolls compared to real women. And here is something slightly odd, although likely a coincidence. You first see Mike browsing the women’s clothing section of a large store, although this one has a wig section, and I had one of those deja-vu sensations, like I had seen the film before. (The other thing is, despite being of entirely different build, he looks somewhat like me, I thought! Maybe it was just the T-shirt and shorts, though.) Mike is shown introducing his real girl friend to his dolls for the first time. She too has some reservations about the dolls, but she is an open-minded individual.

The last quote I use here is from Davecat: “I like things constant – and you can’t really get more constant than a doll.” It blew me away. Thoroughly recommended.”

OK – why don’t I reap high praise?

1) They tried to make the doll owners look like “odd” people – people on the edge of insanity.

2) They blamed the dolls on my break-up with Jamie. Truth is, I had only knew her two weeks before the shoot and I briefed her completely on what was going on. The break-up was caused by the fact she lied about her age and the show producers told me her real age. She was WAY older than me in reality and I was NOT OK with that. I actually told the show producers about the real facts but they had no interest in that. They only had an interest in showing doll owners as freaks.

3) I fought with them constantly over dialog – they wanted me to say certain things – like “When you talk to your dolls – what do you talk about?” or “Which doll do you love and have sex with the most?”

In the end, they edited to what they wanted the show to have – me looking like the rest of the doll owners – completely crazy and out of touch with the real world. At this time, I turn down any additional offers to work with the media – I paid my dues and that was enough for me.

However, the previous film crew who did a Realdoll special with me (For Argentina TV) did do a good job of trying to show the world that Realdolls really are and who the owners really are also. So there is hope that the media will try to film the reality of the situation instead of what they want the world out there to see – a bunch of completely insane people who have dolls in their lives instead of people.

But hey if that’s what they want to film – just ask “how much?” – how much are you going to pay for me to look like a complete idiot and mental case? Make it worth my while to be filmed for three days saying what YOU want me to say about the dolls!

It seems that all doll owners are seen in the “Love Object” mold to these people – insane men who own a doll as a replacement girlfriend.

If you talk to Abyss – doll owners are as different as they come. Some buy them for photography, some as an object of art; even scientists buy them for robotic experiments. And yes, some men buy them to use for masturbation instead of a Playboy magazine.
