Our Featured Photographer for July 2021 is Nanako

Meet Moriyama Nanako

First of all, thank you for inviting me to be a Featured Photographer!

My Doll:

Let me introduce Moriyama Nanako (or Nana-chan, for short) to you: She is a light tan, WM 156, with a #85 head. Actually, she is Nanako 2.0, a replacement for Nanako 1.0, who suffered a broken hip, plus other issues; but, I consider them the same doll. I’ve had Nanako for going on three years now, and have become very fond of taking photos of her. I think she is quite beautiful (as, I imagine, all owners regard their respective dolls), and I try to bring out that quality in the images I take. Needless to say, I don’t always succeed, but, it is, after all, an ongoing – in not lifelong - quest.

The shoot:

I especially enjoy photographing Nanako in her growing collection of kimono, yukata, and hanfu, and that is the theme of the present collection of photographs. She wears a modern kimono (white with blue flowers), and in some shots a vintage, silk haori (the indigo jacket worn over her kimono).

Equipment:

My little “studio” – such as it is – features the following equipment: A Nikon D5600 camera, with three lenses, of which I only used two in this set: The kit, 18x35mm Nikkor f 3.5-5.6, and a prime, 50mm Nikkor f 1.8. My lighting consists of a 22-inch GVM 80W softbox, and a pair of Neewer 10W LED lights. Besides that, I have several 5x7 foot backdrops in different colors and textures. I also have a Neewer speedlight, but rarely use it. Most of the images in this set were taken with just the twin 10W LED lights.

Finally, I hope you will get as much enjoyment from viewing them as I did in taking them.

Note from the Editor: Each month we will feature a different photographer's work. We invite doll owners and manufacturers alike to participate in this new monthly feature. Photo shoots must meet a minimum quality level. If you do not meet that level we are happy to work with you, critique your photos and help you to raise the bar on your photography. Good photo shoots can be had with low cost digital cameras. It is all in the technique.
