Masai’s Blog: July 2021 - Rules to Live By

Parenting has changed tremendously since I was a child because Parents didn’t want to be your friend then. It was very clear, they were your authoritarian Parents and you are the child and you better behave. Both of my Parents were disciplinarians and I grew up during Corporal Punishment where you were whacked in School for various infractions. When I speak to Lorrie about her childhood her memory is cloudy because she had everything she wanted and never had to think about anything. You are no help Honey. The most frequent thing I remember about my childhood was a lot of whuppins and a lot of “Rules to Live By” quotes.

They were either Ditties, Poet quotes, Bible quotes and my Parents own made up quotes that I better live by. There were 4 sayings my Parent’s regularly shouted at me….” Don’t let your mouth waddle out a check that your ass can’t cash”, Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you”, I’ll knock you over into the middle of next week” and finally “I’ll skin you alive”. Brutal. Us kids were pretty well behaved because Mom & Dad did not play and they had no problem messing us up!

Nevertheless, throughout my entire life I was showered with words to live by from all the people who played a part in molding me. As I was telling Lorrie about some of the quotes my Parent’s bestowed upon me, she went ahead and did some research on some Cardinal Rules to Live Life By and this is what she came up with. First, 2 more from my Parents: “Fools Jump in Where Angels Dare to Tread” and Don’t be at the Airport When Your Ship Comes In”, Thanks Parental Units.

Now, here is some choice “Rules to Live By” that Lorrie stumbled upon that you might like:

  • Be the person you want to be, because you have to see that person every day.

  • Stay true to yourself, because no one respects a follower.

  • Cherish love when you find it, because it’s rare.

  • Remember those who helped you, because they haven’t forgotten.

  • Stop thinking so much, because your thoughts are the root of most of your problems.

  • Give thanks, because it’s way better than asking for forgiveness.

  • Don’t discredit anyone, because you might need a job someday.

  • Find the silver lining, unless there’s a golden one.

  • Never judge on first impressions, because people always surprise you.

  • Never follow the crowd, because you’re better than that.

  • Ask questions, because they’re the precursor to answers.

  • Dream big, because small dreams are never worth the chase.

What I do know is throughout my entire life I always had these kind of words floating around in my head and through osmosis they guided me to a decent respectable life. Thanks Family, Teachers and true friends, it is very much appreciated.
