Masai’s Blog: Classic TV Cartoons vs Today's – September 2021

As I was thinking about this Blog I was having fond memories of watching Cartoons as a child and young Adult. For some reason I don’t watch them anymore because I can’t relate to them. My students for years tried to get me into Sponge Bob but I never got it. What was so special about Sponge Bob? I even remember trying to relate to “The Simpsons” and I did like them some, especially little Sister. Sometimes late at night when I can’t sleep, I will go to the few Cartoon channels I have on Dish TV but nothing made today peaks my interest whatsoever. (I’ll take suggestions though.)

Now when I was a child, we had it going on with: Cartoons, Claymation TV shows, Marionette Puppet TV shows like “Super Car & Fireball XL5” …and my favorite, after school Children’s TV shows that had stuffed animal hosts and comic relief side-kicks. Now this is outside of the morning programming I always watched which was the “Captain Kangaroo Show” featuring Mr. Green Jeans. As a super small child, it was the famed Romper Room but when I got to Elementary School, I would run home from school to watch the “DD Donavon Show” which was a huge stuffed Coyote that played the piano and his side kick was a stuffed Dog that sat on top. They were basically a kid’s variety show that had everything, cartoons, special guests, you name it. Then came Middle School and I was sprung on Mouseketeer Annette Funicello in “The Mickey Mouse Club” that came on every day after School. Another variety show I was glued to. All in all, I loved this stuff and the phonier the better. I wish it was someway to bring them all back on a nostalgic TV station...ah the Golden Age of Cartoons.

My favorite toons when I was a kid were: Looney Toons: Bugs, Daffy & Sylvester are my favorite characters – The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show - Jonny Quest - The Heckle & Jeckle Show – The Woody Woodpecker Show – Felix The Cat - Augie Doggy and Doggy Daddy - Quick Draw McGraw & Baba Louie, - The World of Commander McBragg - Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show - Underdog - Ricochet Rabbit & Droop-A-Long - Dudley Do-Right – The Beanie and Cecil Show - Tom Terrific - George of the Jungle - Klondike Kat - Deputy Dawg - Secret Squirrel - Snooper and Blabber – Lippy The Lion & Hardy Har Har - Dastardly and Mutley in their Flying Machines - Atom Ant - Magilla Gorilla - Aqua Man - Wacky Races - The Archie Show - Super Chicken - Tom Slick - Fantastic Four - Tennessee Tuxedo and his Tales - Fractured Fairy Tales - Mighty Mouse & The New and Improved Mighty Mouse from the 1980s - Clutch Cargo - Snaggle Puss - Crusader Rabbit - Pink Panther - Touché Turtle & Dum Dum - Space Ghost - Go Go Gophers - Top Cat and Wally Gator. Then later on, it was Samurai Jack and the “Power Puff Girls”. We really liked the villains in the Power Puff Girls like MoJo JoJo, The Ameba Boys & Him.

Well, all this being said, it makes me realize that I have to get my Cartoon programming going again just like my gaming. I used to love these two things but I got away from them. I also love great well drawn Comic Books and I saved some of the best of them from back in the day. I think going forward Lorrie and I are going to have to sit down and put together some YouTube links of the old Classic TV Cartoons that we can watch because I love to laugh and some that phony stuff was funny as all get out. Truthfully, I need that back in my life.

Every day is a challenge for everyone, so take care of yourselves and stay safe.
